On August 23, 2024, Kathak Kendra had the privilege of hosting a captivating Tabla presentation by Sri Naushad Ahmad Khan, a senior Tabla accompanist renowned for his expertise in Tabla. The event commenced with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, joined by other eminent faculty and Gurus from the Kendra, marking a respectful and ceremonial start to the session.
Sri Naushad Ahmad Khan is a distinguished Tabla exponent known for his versatility and deep-rooted experience in accompanying Kathak artists. Born into a musically inclined family, he received his initial training in the Ajrada Gharana style from his maternal uncle, the late Ustad Aashiq Hussain Khan, and further honed his skills under the tutelage of Ustaad Ramzan Khan. His career has taken him across the globe, performing at prestigious events in Switzerland, France, London, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Australia, and the Festival of India in his home country. As a panel artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), he is recognized as a leading percussionist.
In his lecture demonstration titled 'Kathak Nritya Mein Tabla ka Mahatva' (The Importance of Tabla in Kathak Dance), Sri Naushad Ahmad Khan provided an in-depth exploration of the Tabla's role in Kathak. He elaborated on how different finger techniques produce varied sounds on the Tabla, focusing on a traditional Bandish taught to him by the late Guru Durga Prasad Ji, which holds personal significance. His demonstration highlighted various Tabla patterns, showcasing their alignment and craftsmanship. He also discussed different fingering techniques, emphasizing how the Tabla can effectively complement Kathak performances.
The session concluded with a heartfelt felicitation of Sri Naushad Ahmad Khan by Director Smt. Bhagwati, acknowledging his significant contributions to the art form and his role in enriching the students’ understanding of tabla. The event was a valuable experience, illustrating the intricate relationship between tabla and Kathak.
