A Grand Celebration of World Dance Day at Kathak Kendra


Kathak Kendra, a Constituent Unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, celebrated World Dance Day on 29 April 2026 with great enthusiasm and artistic spirit. The event was organized to commemorate the universal language of dance and to highlight its role in preserving cultural heritage, fostering creativity, and promoting artistic excellence. The celebration brought together distinguished guests, renowned artists, students, scholars, and dance enthusiasts in a vibrant tribute to the art of dance. World Dance Day, observed globally on 29 April every year, serves as an occasion to recognize the importance of dance as a powerful medium of cultural expression, communication, and social harmony. Through this celebration, Kathak Kendra reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing and promoting the rich traditions of Indian classical dance.

On this occasion, Shri Aneish P. Rajan, Director, Ministry of Culture, Government of India; Manjushree Chatterjee, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee; Shri Raju Das, Secretary, Sangeet Natak Akademi; and Dr Y. Theba Devi, Director, Kathak Kendra, graced the event with their esteemed presence. Their participation added significance to the celebration and reflected their continued support for the promotion and preservation of India’s performing arts traditions. The dignitaries appreciated the efforts of Kathak Kendra in imparting quality training, encouraging artistic innovation, and preserving the rich legacy of Kathak. They also highlighted the importance of cultural institutions in safeguarding traditional art forms while making them relevant to contemporary audiences.

The highlight of the programme was the captivating Kathak performances presented by Surashree Bhattacharya, Dheerendra Tiwari, Gauri Diwakar, and Abhimanyu Lal.
