Rhythm, Tabla Bol-Nikaas and Use of Rhythm in Composition

Sri Karan Gangani, a prominent figure in the Kathak dance community, is known for his deep-rooted connection to the Jaipur style of Kathak. Hailing from a family of legendary artists, he has been trained under the esteemed Guru Rajendra Gangani, mastering the art of Kathak with remarkable skill and dedication. His contributions to Kathak have been recognized by prestigious institutions, as he is both an ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) and Doordarshan graded artist.

The focus of Gangani's lecture demonstration was 'Laykari and Tabla ke Bol ka Nikas evam Lay ka Prayog,' a detailed exploration of rhythm (Laykari) and the use of Tabla rhythms in Kathak. He provided an in-depth analysis of various elements such as Ang (body movements), Pratyan (specific rhythmic patterns), and Upaang (subtle gestures), and their applications in enhancing the dance performance. Gangani elaborated on the systematic approach to increasing Laya (tempo) through mathematical calculations, explaining how a gradual rise in tempo can be effectively managed and validated. His methodical approach to understanding and applying rhythm was particularly enlightening.

The session concluded with Gangani introducing a unique composition to the students, offering them a practical demonstration of the concepts discussed. This new piece was well-received by the students, who appreciated the opportunity to learn from a distinguished artist and gain deeper insights into the nuances of Kathak. The event was a significant educational experience, enriching the students' understanding and appreciation of Kathak dance.
