Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, is India's premier institution dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and advancement of Kathak, one of the country's most celebrated classical dance forms. As a Constituent Unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, Kathak Kendra has played a pivotal role in nurturing generations of dancers, preserving traditional knowledge, and promoting the rich cultural heritage of India.

The institution was established in 1964 under the Bharatiya Kala Kendra with the objective of providing systematic training in Kathak and creating a dedicated platform for the study, practice, and development of this classical dance form. At a time when India's traditional arts were undergoing significant transformation, the establishment of Kathak Kendra marked an important step toward safeguarding and strengthening the country's cultural legacy. The institution was envisioned as a center where the diverse traditions and gharanas of Kathak could be taught, practiced, and preserved for future generations.

In 1969, the administration of Kathak Kendra was transferred to Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama. This transition strengthened the institution's national standing and enabled it to expand its educational, research, and performance activities. Under the Akademi's guidance, Kathak Kendra developed into a leading center for excellence in Kathak training and scholarship.

Throughout its history, Kathak Kendra has been associated with some of the most distinguished gurus and performers of Kathak. Among them, the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj occupies a special place. His long association with the institution as a guru, choreographer, and director significantly enhanced its reputation and contributed immensely to the global recognition of Kathak. Many other eminent artists, scholars, and teachers have also contributed to the institution's growth and success through their dedication and expertise.

Kathak Kendra offers a range of academic and professional training programs, including diploma courses, workshops, lecture demonstrations, seminars, and cultural events.
