Guru Nageshwar Lal Karan, Visiting Faculty (Tabla) at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi received his initial training from Ustad Mamme Khan of the Ajrada Gharana in Delhi and Shri Santosh Masih of the Lucknow - Farukhabad Gharana. He spent many years under the guidance of Guru Pandit Lallu Singh, a renowned Tabla player of the Gwalior Gharana, where he received extensive training in solo Tabla performance. Dr. Nageshwar Lal Karan has spread the art of Tabla both in India and internationally. An avid Tabla player and a wonderful Guru, Shri Nageshwar Lal Karan symbolises a unique combination of being an Educationist and Artist. His long tenure with Education section and carrying on being a performer is not easy.
During his lecture, Guruji connected the content to his written research paper titled "Tabla Accompaniment with Kathak Dance." He discussed various Tukras, Parans, Chakkardar Parmelu, and other compositions that are included in this book. The lecture session began with Guruji and his disciple performing a Ganesh Paran together. The disciple recited the Ganesh Paran while both Guruji and the disciple played its Nikasi (composition) together. Guruji demonstrated the intricacies of this Ganesh Paran in five sequences: from Sam to Sam (start to end), a 2-cycle composition, a 3-cycle composition (Chakkardar), a 4-cycle composition, and finally a 5-cycle composition, all of which he explained and illustrated effectively.
The main topic of the lecture was how to accompany Kathak dance with Tabla. Guruji also involved the students of Kathak Kendra in the session. He provided detailed information about Tihais, including Chakkardar Tihai, Beddam Tihai, Farmaishee Tihai, and Kamali Tihai. The students performed Kayda and Ladiyan in Teentaal, and Guruji guided them in demonstrating their coordination through these performances. The disciples accompanying Guruji were Nitya Patni, Ishani Bose, Prahlad, Imran, and Vasu.
