The Kathak Kendra organised a three-day workshop exclusively for their students from July 29th to 31st by Dr. Puru Dadheech, eminent Kathak scholar, author and Guru at the Swami Vivekananda Sabhagar, Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. On the third and final day, a presentation was held showcasing what had been learned over the past two days.
Dr. Dadheech, while staying within the boundaries of Kathak dance, has innovated a new style rooted in the scriptures, which was reflected in the presentation today. The program then commenced with an inaugural dance performance by the students of the Kendra and under the choreographic direction of Guru Jaya Bhatt, which captivated the audience.
Following this, the Diploma Honours students were taught a Ganesh Vandana composed in the rhythm of Jhap Taal. Guruji himself guided the students through this composition, and his influence was evident in their dance over the two days of effort. Senior students were subsequently taught a Dhrupad in Shikhar Taal of 17 beats, related to the season of spring, which they performed.
This composition, also created by Dr. Puru Dadheech, beautifully depicted the enchanting scenes of the spring season and was crafted according to the rhythm of Shikhar Taal. Both of these compositions were taught in such a way that the pieces, including the Tukras and Parans, could also be used independently in other dance performances.
The program concluded with a solo Kathak recital by Kathak artiste and senior disciple of Guruji, Mrs. Harshita Dadheech, who presented her performance in the rare Mankitha Taal. Overall, the three-day workshop was highly successful, where students had the opportunity to learn the intricacies of dance from a distinguished artist like Guru Puru Dadheech.
