On July 21, 2024, the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, under the aegis of the Sangeet Natak Academy and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. In conjunction with this prestigious event, the Kathak Kendra was invited to perform before an esteemed audience. The performances showcased the rich traditions of Kathak, with each piece meticulously choreographed by the Kendra’s distinguished Gurus and Prashikshaks.
The first presentation, "Swaagat," was a vibrant Kathak performance celebrating new ideas and human creativity. Choreographed by Ms. Jaya Bhatt, it featured the talents of dancers Shri Amit Ray and Ms. Ashmita, highlighting innovation and artistic beauty through dynamic movements.
The second presentation, "Tarana," delved into the rhythmic aspects of Kathak, showcasing the elegance of rhythm through various movements and phrases. With music by Samiullah Khan and choreography by Gauri Diwakar, the performance was presented by the National Institute of Kathak Kendra, featuring dancers Aastha Sijaria, Divya, and Deepshikha Upreti.
The third performance, "Omkara," was a devotional piece invoking Lord Shiva, presented by Guru Smt. Malti Shyam Ji. This piece featured Dhrupad, an ancient Hindustani Classical Music genre, blending spiritual wisdom with solemnity. The composition "Shambho Mahadeva," arranged by Pravesh Malik and choreographed by Smt. Malti Shyam, was brought to life by dancers Harshita Sharma, Dolma Gupta, and Laxman Sahu, showcasing the grandeur of Lord Shiva.
The final presentation, "Varsha Mangal," captured the essence of the monsoon season through Kathak, with intricate portrayals of clouds, lightning, and rain. Choreographed by Guru Abhimanyu Lal and composed by Guru Geetanjali Lal, this piece used technical elements like Tukda and Tihaai, with dancers Swasti Jha and Shubhanshi Jain performing to the Teental and Raag Malhar. Each performance highlighted the beauty and depth of Kathak, receiving commendation from the distinguished audience at the event.
